Connections

Welcome to version almost-2.0 of our page of select links to other websites and blogs. Collectively, these constitute a kind of second-ish cut we are making in sketching out some connections and linkages to web-based data, reflection and thinking in areas within and adjacent to vital systems and vital systems security. The selection below is by no means exhaustive; we intend both to add more links and to continue to organize them by whatever categories seem appropriate. Have a peek at some of the sites that have piqued our interest. We’re always looking to improve and expand the mix, so suggestions are welcome.

Wired has two blogs that engage with homeland security and VSS-related issues. Extremely useful not only for pointing out nifty gadgets and the more-than-occasional bizarro story, but also for helping to sketch out the fault lines where technology and security policy meet. Danger Room focuses on national security, while Threat Level describes its purview as “Privacy, Security, Politics and Crime Online” Sense of humor and appreciation for irony required. Check them out:

More straight-laced, but just as fascinating, are the blogs from Bruce Schneier. One is housed at WIRED, the other is found on his own site. Thoughts?

WIRED - Security Matters

Bruce Schneier’s “Schneier on Security” blog

For web logs with authors who are (or seem!) a) engaged with or adjacent to homeland security-related endeavors, and b) who routinely exhibit an ability to provide useful and compelling first- and second-order observations, at least four — whoops, make that FIVE now — deserve mention here. Not only is the commentary interesting, but there’s data to be mined here.

Bugs ‘N’ Gas Gal is rising in the ranks for me curious — List of links is frankly overwhelming.

Homeland Security on The Huffington Post
Punditry and commentary from news hounds and commentators. Occasional nugget.

The Nuclear Threat Initiative’s Global Security Newswire
Breakdown of CBRN-related news on a global scale.

CIDRAP - Michael Osterholm’s group at the University of Minnesota’s Center for Infectious Disease Research & Policy. Similar to the NTI’s newswire, this site is constantly on top of the main news, especially from a public health preparedness point of view.

Although it’s defense-heavy, the website govexec dot com provides a fascinating window onto homeland security thinking as viewed in Washington. Check it out here, and report back!
