Drexler is famous for his cautionary tales about Grey Goo, and the problems associated with his predictions of self-replicating nanobots. For most of the 1990s, there was a lot of talk amongst the nanorati concerning this supposed danger, but it has since faded (in the wake of Prey, by Michael Crichton and “Why the Future Doesn’t Need” us by Bill Joy–which raised the alarmist stakes and created a backlash from scientists who generally think that Drexler is wrong about the possibility of creating self-replicating nanobots that will eat us up. Nonetheless, Drexler started the Foresight Institute (with Christine Peterson) and it has taken up the challenge of both promoting drexlerian versions of nanotech, and raising “concerns” about the longterm threat to the human race.
